Skype has announced a new version of its iPhone app that offers video calling to people across the world over 3G and Wi-Fi networks. Available for download from the Apple app store from 30th December, the new version of the app will allow iPhone, iPad and iPod users to make and receive free (data charges apply) Skype video calls for the first time. Moreover, the new app also allows for conversation with desktop users.

The Skype app for Apple devices has enjoyed immense commercial success in the past year, and is rated as one of the top five free iPhone apps in 2010. In fact, video calling represents 40% of all Skype-to-Skype minutes for the first six months in 2010. Introduction of the new version with no Facetime-restrictions, communication via video calling seems like the most apropos service to use.

The new Skype for iPhone app is compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with i0S 4.0 or above. iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad devices have been limited to video receiving capabilities.

Skype for iPhone app is available for download from the App store on www.skype.com/go/iphone.
