TerreStar Networks said it has successfully placed the TerreStar-1 satellite into its assigned orbital position in the geosynchronous arc. The company also said the TerreStar-1 successfully deployed its 18 meter 2GHz S-Band reflector, the largest commercial satellite antenna ever deployed.
According to TerreStar Networks, the satellite will be able to provide integrated satellite and terrestrial communication components to enable mobile communication anywhere in Canada and the United State, Cellular News writes.
"We are very excited with the two critical milestones that TerreStar-1 has achieved since its July 1st launch" said Steve Nichols, Executive Vice-President of Operations. "Today's announcement signals that we are closer to providing the North American market with the latest technology to employ in meeting customers' critical organizational communications needs."
Additionally, Cellular News informs that handsets will typically roam onto terrestrial networks when possible and when out of range they will switch to the satellite network, however a clear view of the Southern sky is required.
